This post is written to bring us back to the Bible, especially the powerful description given in Revelation chapter 1, and to remind us that Jesus came into the world as a real man in a real place: a Jewish Messiah born among the people of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My goal here isn\u2019t to stir division or reduce Jesus to a skin tone or an artistic preference. It\u2019s to encourage honesty with the text, humility about what we assume, and reverence for who He is. When we let Scripture correct our mental pictures, it can also correct something deeper\u2014how we listen to Him, how we worship Him, and how seriously we take His call to repentance and readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you read, I invite you to keep your heart open, your Bible close, and your focus on the One Revelation reveals: the risen, reigning Son of God\u2014holy, glorious, and returning soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus\u2019 Jewish, Middle Eastern Appearance (Revelation 1 Context)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who\u2019s that? It\u2019s Jesus as described in Revelation 1\u2014Jewish and Middle Eastern in appearance. People from ancient Judea and the surrounding Levant commonly had darker hair and eyes, with skin tones ranging from light olive to medium brown, so he likely would\u2019ve looked similar to many Jewish people from that region rather than like later European-style portrayals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People who are Hebrew\/Jewish from Israel and the broader Levant\/Middle East don\u2019t have one single \u201clook,\u201d but there are some common, region-typical traits you\u2019ll often see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Skin tones:<\/strong> a wide range from light olive to medium brown (and sometimes lighter or darker), often tanning easily in the Mediterranean sun<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Hair:<\/strong> commonly <strong>dark brown to black<\/strong>, usually <strong>thick<\/strong>, and can be <strong>straight, wavy, or curly<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Eyes:<\/strong> most often <strong>brown or hazel<\/strong>, with <strong>green\/blue<\/strong> also present<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Facial features:<\/strong> often <strong>dark eyebrows<\/strong>, a variety of <strong>nose shapes<\/strong>, and <strong>beards<\/strong> are common among men (especially in traditional communities)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Build\/height:<\/strong> varies widely like any population\u2014no single standard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I&#8217;m going to say in this post is going to upset racists over skin color. I want to talk about Jesus&#8217; skin color in relation to lineages. First, take a look at Christ&#8217;s lineage in Matthew 1:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Matthew 1:1-17 Living Bible<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1&nbsp;<\/strong>These are the ancestors of Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David and of Abraham:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Abraham was the father of Isaac; Isaac was the father of Jacob; Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (Tamar was their mother); Perez was the father of Hezron; Hezron was the father of Aram;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Aram was the father of Amminadab; Amminadab was the father of Nahshon; Nahshon was the father of Salmon;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Salmon was the father of Boaz (Rahab was his mother); Boaz was the father of Obed (Ruth was his mother); Obed was the father of Jesse;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (his mother was the widow of Uriah);<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Solomon was the father of Rehoboam; Rehoboam was the father of Abijah; Abijah was the father of Asa;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat; Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram; Jehoram was the father of Uzziah;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Uzziah was the father of Jotham; Jotham was the father of Ahaz; Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh; Manasseh was the father of Amos; Amos was the father of Josiah;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers (born at the time of the exile to Babylon).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>After the exile: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel; Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud; Abiud was the father of Eliakim; Eliakim was the father of Azor;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Azor was the father of Zadok; Zadok was the father of Achim; Achim was the father of Eliud;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Eliud was the father of Eleazar; Eleazar was the father of Matthan; Matthan was the father of Jacob;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Jacob was the father of Joseph (who was the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ the Messiah).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>These are fourteen of the generations from Abraham to King David; and fourteen from King David\u2019s time to the exile; and fourteen from the exile to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will analyze Christ&#8217;s royal lineage in Matthew chapter 1 and tell you what Jesus&#8217; skin color was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Short answer:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew 1 shows Jesus\u2019 ancestry is <strong>Israelite\/Jewish<\/strong>, rooted in <strong>ancient Near Eastern Semitic people<\/strong>. They try to fit Spain into a \u201cbrown\u201d box simply because Mexico looks different \u2014 a mistake rooted in American racial thinking, not in European reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This context matters, because once you understand the mix of Indigenous and Spanish ancestry in Mexico \u2014 and the confusion it creates in the U.S. \u2014 you can understand Spain\u2019s actual complexion and why it varies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Circle of the Earth: One Human Family<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All people come from the same human family. You were told that strength comes from distancing yourself from your roots, from denying the parts of your heritage that feel inconvenient or unfitting for the image you want to project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But truth does not negotiate with insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus did not come from Europe. He did not come from the fantasies of Renaissance paintings. He came from the soil of Israel \u2014 a Jewish, Middle Eastern man with brown skin and Semitic features. That is not a threat to anyone\u2019s worth; it is simply reality. But Revelation does not give us a soft portrait; it gives us a blazing One\u2014eyes like fire, voice like rushing waters, face shining like the sun. The Jesus who walks among the lampstands is not a cultural symbol. He is the Lord of glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew\u2019s genealogy roots Him in real history, real people, real soil. Revelation roots Him in eternal majesty. Together they declare one truth: <strong>The Son of God is not ours to redesign\u2014He is ours to worship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now that you know His lineage, His region, His humanity, and His glory, you are accountable for what you do with that knowledge. The truth demands response. It calls for repentance where pride has lived, for unity where division has grown, and for reverence where casual faith has crept in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jesus who walked the roads of Judea is the same Jesus who will split the sky. Let every idol fall. Let every prejudice die. Let every false image be cast down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the One who stands in Revelation 1 is not asking for our opinions\u2014He is calling for our obedience. And when He returns, every tribe and tongue will see Him as He truly is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Knowing the Real Jesus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the day, the most important question isn\u2019t, \u201cWhat did Jesus look like?\u201d but, \u201cDo I know Him?\u201d People can debate images and appearances, yet still resist His voice, ignore His warnings, and delay repentance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jesus revealed in Revelation 1 is alive. He sees. He speaks. He corrects. He comforts. And He is returning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why this post isn\u2019t meant to stir division or reduce Jesus to a skin tone. It\u2019s meant to bring us back to Scripture and to the historical reality that Jesus entered the world as a real man in a real place: the Jewish Messiah, born among the people of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we let the Bible shape our understanding, it can also reshape something deeper\u2014how we worship, how we listen, and how seriously we take His call to holiness and readiness. Many traditional portrayals of Jesus reflect the cultures that produced them. But Scripture anchors us to who He truly is: the faithful Witness, the First and the Last, the Holy One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, let every inaccurate or overly politicized image fall away, and let Christ stand before us as the Bible reveals Him\u2014glorious, authoritative, and worthy of reverence. Recognizing Jesus\u2019 Jewish, Middle Eastern context can also help us reject prejudice and pride, because Jesus is not a symbol for any one nation or ethnicity. He is the Savior of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May this truth sharpen our understanding, deepen our reverence, strengthen our love for others, and stir us to live ready\u2014watching, praying, and walking in obedience until the day we see Him face to face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In Closing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I generated this image of Jesus because I wanted a picture to hang on my wall\u2014one that reflects a biblical description rather than a cultural tradition. I chose Revelation chapter 1 because it reveals Jesus in His present, glorified state, long after His birth and earthly ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to keep what I share about God truthful and grounded in Scripture. Jesus is the Jewish Messiah\u2014a Hebrew Jew\u2014and His earthly lineage places Him in the Middle East. Over the years I\u2019ve seen many church images where Jesus is portrayed to match the ethnicity of the local congregation\u2014Black in some places, Latino in others, and White in others. While those images may feel familiar to people, they can also reveal how easily we reshape Jesus into our own likeness. Instead, we should accept Him as He is: the Messiah who came through Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Revelation describes His eyes as like a flame of fire. In my own spiritual experiences over the past ten years, when I have seen Jesus, His features have consistently appeared Middle Eastern\u2014olive to brown-toned skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. I\u2019m not trying to make this about race; I\u2019m simply describing what I\u2019ve witnessed as plainly as I can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the reason I\u2019m sharing this closing: after I created the image, I heard an angel say more than once, \u201cThat looks like Jesus.\u201d Then I heard, \u201cThat\u2019s how Jesus looks. Now you know how the Son of God looks.\u201d When I asked the angel\u2019s name, he said, \u201cMichael.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I hear Jesus saying in the Spirit:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That&#8217;s how I look. If you see Me, you&#8217;re going to get scared because My eyes are red. They don&#8217;t look human. I grew up in the region where our ancestors have black hair and brown eyes. The Middle East; home of the Gods. I&#8217;m not white or black or Asian. Now use this to say I&#8217;m not white, black or Asian. Keep writing, son. Keep telling these people who they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the Gods be the glory. Amen and Selah, as my ancient relative, David, said.
